I went ahead
And bought the Pentax K10D camera. The $50 rebate expired yesterday, and I wanted to make sure to get that. It should arrive today (hooray for Amazon.Com items that ship from Fernley). That'll give me a chance to get a feel for it, and get some use out of it at a church BBQ and a couple softball games tomorrow night. And, of course, I'll have it for the upcoming jaunt to the Black Rock.

Yeah! I can't wait to check it out at the bbq. I want to go to black rock sometime too - you make it sound fabulous! We did pyramid with a full moon and it was awesome to take slow shutter speed shots. I imagine black rock the same way.
I had wanted to go off this last weekend and take some full-moon shots with my point-and-shoot acmera, but a bout of nausea Saturday night kept me grounded.
I think the full moon with a properly long exposure would make for some fascinating landscapes. I think a waterfall under the full moon would be rather cool. The trouble is finding a waterfall that faces south, to make sure it gets the light.
Any thoughts?
Hey dave, what and where is black rock?
The Black Rock Desert is an area north of Pyramid Lake, right by Gerlach.
The impressive thing about it is that it is flat. Very, very flat. Roughly a million acres of flat. It's alkali dust, settled into what was once the location of a lake, in some areas up to 10,000 feet deep. It remains flat, because in the winter and spring snow and snow-melt form a very shallow lake that soon evaporates, re-flattening it for the next summer.
You can see a part of it in the background image for my blog - but this is facing the closest mountains to where we stopped the night I took the picture.
I enjoy it because the open expanse is almost surreal. It's a great spot for stargazing because it's far enough into the wilderness to get a very dark sky. There's also a lot of hot springs and other desert-things in the area.
This is my photos from my trip up there last year. This is an interesting resource for learning more about the desert.
Oh, and Here's a map.
Thanks for the info Dave that is very intersting. I clicked on the link to your pics, but it went to the same page as the resource link. I would love to see the other pics you took.
