Unintended Consequences

Interesting happenings in Las Vegas. Due to the number of homeless people that have crowded local parks, the city decided to make feeding them there illegal.

I can see good and bad reasons behind this. I'm curious to know what others think.

Personally, I think it's a symptom of "I don't want to see the problem, and want it to go away." Put the homeless in distant shelters, far from where I might see them.

The spirit behind this law is what's really distressing. Reasonable people could disagree about how to address homelessness, but outlawing the activity of feeding hungry people is kind of like outlawing loving your mother.

The oulawing of charity is exactly what I would predict of a society that exalted utility/wealth maximization.

I actually, strangely, wrote a novel about this idea...so it's really weird to see it actually happening.
