Some observations:
1) It's a hot dog eating contest.
2) It's on ESPN.
3) The announcers actually sound serious when they call Joey Chestnut an "American Hero."
4) Crazy, crazy, crazy.
5) Stunned disbelief is all I have left.

My sentiments exactly, Dave. For the last while (actually, pretty much since forever) I have avoided any mass media outlets other than what I get via the Internet. Now that I am regularly working out at the gym (thank you, Myocardial Infarction), I see the latest 'news' spread across multiple TV screens every day. I was taken aback at how much airtime this hot dog eating contest received. They discussed the defending champion's sore jaw, etc, etc. I really don't miss TV that much...
We got Cable TV (at least for the moment) at the apartment - not because we paid for it, but because the complex changed providers, and I think they're doing a free preview.
I don't miss it, either. But I think my roommate is in love. Hopefully, he'll survive withdrawl if it goes away again.
